Mac OSX on PC
Apr 23rd, 2010 by Mojtaba

Any OSx86 installation guide can seem daunting at first glance, especially when trying to remember cryptic terminal commands and sorting through volumes of misinformation on the web.  This guide requires no coding, terminal work, or Mac experience of any kind.  You will not need access to a Mac.  In fact, it’s easier and faster for me to install Snow Leopard with fully working components on my system than it is to install Windows 7.  And more fun.

The iBoot + MultiBeast method is designed and tested for any desktop or laptop running the latest line of Intel processors, the Core i3/i5/i7s.  I have had reports of success with older machines as well including CoreDuo, Core2Duo, and even Pentium 4.  However, AMD processors are not supported.

Meet the new MacBook Pro Family!
Apr 13th, 2010 by sid

Apple has finally released the long awaited update for its Macbook Pro family, and it’s a very good update. See the details after the break.

From the press release:

Apple today updated the MacBook Pro line with faster processors, powerful next-generation NVIDIA graphics and even longer battery life. The popular 13-inch MacBook Pro features the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor for up to 80 percent faster graphics and a groundbreaking 10-hour built-in battery. The new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models feature Intel Core i5 and i7 processors and Apple’s new automatic graphics switching technology that toggles seamlessly between powerful NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M and energy efficient Intel HD Graphics processors.

All 13-inch MacBook Pro models now include faster Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 4GB RAM, a 10-hour built-in battery and the new NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor.

The new 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models are up to 50 percent faster than the previous systems.

Using Intel’s state-of-the-art 32 nanometer process, Intel Core i5 and i7 processors integrate the memory controller and Level 3 cache for faster access to system memory. Hyper-Threading technology improves data throughput by creating virtual processing cores, while Turbo Boost optimises performance between the two processor cores, accelerating the system from 2.66 GHz to 3.06 GHz for intensive dual core tasks, and up to 3.33 GHz for single core tasks.

All 15-inch and 17-inch models include two graphics processors, the new NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M for peak performance and Intel HD Graphics for energy efficient operation.”

Rebuilding iPhoto Thumbnails
Oct 28th, 2009 by Mojtaba

Today I found that when I click on a thumbnail in iPhoto 09 I get an image that is different than I clicked on and when I click to go back to thumbnails area the proper image shows in the thumbnail area for about a quarter second and then it reverts to the wrong image …

The problem is in iPhoto cache and we have to rebuild the thumbnail cache! To do so close iPhoto, hold down cmd-opt-shift, then open iPhoto you will see the following message appears on the screen, then you can rebuild whole library!

Note that rebuild process can take quite a lot of time, anywhere from 5 mins to several hours according to library size and selected options.

After clicking rebuild, iPhoto will start rebuilding library.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard, More detail
Aug 13th, 2009 by Mojtaba

Appleinsider posted a list of changes to the Mac OS X installation process for Snow Leopard. Their sources also confirmed that build 10A432 went Gold Master earlier this week.

  • Although Rosetta and Quicktime 7 are both included on the Mac OS X 10.6 installation DVD, both are designated as optional installs by default. However, if Mac OS X 10.6 is being installed on a Mac that contains a registration a key for Quicktime 7 Pro, the installer will install Quicktime 7 automatically.
  • Options to “Erase and Install” and “Archive and Install” are no longer present in the Mac OS X 10.6 installer. According to those familiar with the software, this was done for convenience, so that users do not accidentally erase and install their Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard partitions. However, “Erase and Install” remains available through Disk Utility, which is also included on the installation DVD.
  • If you need to reinstall 10.6, it automatically archives and installs for you.
  • A reinstallation will not affect your Mac OS X version number. In other words, reinstallation of Mac OS X 10.6 on a Mac that contains Mac OS X 10.6.1 (when it becomes available) will not overwrite any new components delivered by 10.6.1. So when the re-install is complete, you will still be running Mac OS X 10.6.1. This will save users considerable time.
  • There is no “Previous System” folder at the root level after reinstalling.
  • If a power outage occurs, installation will pick up from where it left off.
  • To prevent the Blue Screen error that plagued some users when upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5, a software compatibility check is included that has a list of known “bad” apps, and disables them. Those programs are moved to an “Incompatible Software” folder.
  • Unlike Mac OS X 10.5, you cannot install Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on computers where the hard drive reports a S.M.A.R.T. failure.
  • Installation initially triggers a large chunk of data to be copied from the installation DVD to the user’s primary hard drive. The bulk of the installation is then managed from the hard drive, speeding up the installation process considerably. After a successful installation, that large chunk of data is automatically removed.

Mac OS X Snow Leopard is available to pre-order on Amazon for $29:

Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Family Pack (5-User)
Mac OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard
