redsn0w, How to use?REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN. Dev-Team Said

Using redsn0w is easy as 1,2,3 but the GUI is not good as Quickpwn ;)

What we need

  • An iPod Touch (1G or 2G) / iPhone (2G or 3G)
  • Firmware files -Download it- *iPod firmware must be downloaded via iTunes
  • redsn0w! -Download it-

The process

  1. Update your iPod/iPhone to version 3.0 using iTuens
  2. Open redsn0w and browse for firmware file
    • iTunes download the firmware files in following directory (MAC OS)
      • ~/library/itunes/iPhone Software Updates
    • Windows users can search for firmware files in “users” directory
  3. Wait for redsn0w to recognize the firmware file
  4. Click next
  5. Select install Cydia (if you want Cydia!!)
  6. Unlock option available for iPhone 2G users
    1. Check unlock if you want baseband unlocking,
    2. Click next
    3. Browse for bootloader files -Download it-
  7. Click next
  8. Follow the on screen instruction CAREFULLY!
  9. Wait for redsn0w to jailbreak your iDevice!
  10. Enjoy jailbroken Device :D

I have a unlocked/jailbroken 3G running, 2.2. I want to upgrade to 3.0. Do I understand correctly that all i need to do is allow itunes to install the 3.0 upgrade? Then run redsn0w with a downloaded ispw? The Dev Team doesn’t give step by step instructions. I want to make sure I don’t permanently lock my phone. Thanks in advance for any responses.

    Hi,
tried updating my 1G iPhone and get stuck during the last step (rebooting) in redsn0w because windows desides to suddenly “not recognizing the usb device”. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix this? I’m running it on Windows vista.

Is there any pre-requisite formware for using Redsn0w.
I have two unlocked iphones, one on 1.1.3 and other on 2.2.1.
Do i need to upgrade the 1.1.3 firmware before using Redsn0w ?
In case I do, which tool would you suggest ?

    please help me out…thanks !

my phone has been “flashing baseband” for about half an hour eventhough it’s supposed to take 2 mins. is this common?

HELP!!! I tried everything you said, but it bricks my iPhone. I have an unlocked 2G iPhone with 1.1.3 firmware. I tried everything you said and got up to the “Browse for bootloader files” step and set it in DUP mode or whatever it’s called. then redsnow is stuck in “rebooting your iphone” stage, but it never moved anyway. now my iphone doesn’t do anything. pressing any button doesn’t work. is there anything i can do?

I got a iPhone 2G running 2.2.1 (Unlocked & Jailbroken). Can I use redsn0w to upgrade to firmware 3.0? Will i still be able to connect to my operator (its not supported by apple officially). If yes which firmware 3.0 should i use to upgrade (i mean is there any particular custom firmware or I can use the 3.0 official firmware itself).

Thanks for any comments, as all others am too excited to get the 3.0 firmware working on my phone … :-)

@Coolguy – yes you can update your iPhone to version 3.0. your iPhone remains Unlocked & for activation you will have to use redsn0w

The firmware file for iPhone 2G is:

    iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw (iPhone 2G)
    Download links:

@Mark – You can exit DFU Mode with iTunes! To do so, connect you iPhone to PC or Mac and wait for iTunes to detect your device in recovery mode, then Shift-Click (option-click) on restore button and point iTunes to firmware file. Now try using redsn0w again & make sure you follow the on screen instruction carefully!
    Tnx.

@Pete – 2 hours?!? it seems to be something wrong with your iPhone!! I never seen this error before! Try searching Google. sorry!

    now I’m really screwed.

My iPhone was an unlocked and jailbreaked 2g with 1.1.3 firmware. I updated it to OS 3.0 on iTunes. Then I used redsn0w to jailbreak/unlock it. everything seemed fine till the “rebooting your iphone” step, but then I realized that I didn’t put it in the DFU mode correctly. Then everything worked out fine until the “setting baseband” part. It’s supposed to take up to 2 mins, but mine wasn’t finished even after 4 hours, so I forced reset it. Then I tried to restore the firmware on itunes, but I got the “iphone cannot be restored error (23)” message. Now my iPhone is permanently in a recover mode I think. The screen only shows either an apple sign or a USB cable plugging into iTunes sign. I’ve looked everywhere trying to fix this, but none worked out. I tried using iBrick, tried downgrading it to firmware 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 1.0, 1.1.3, pretty much everything, and now I’m clueless on what to do. Please help me, right now I don’t even have a phone! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!

    @pete – Don’t worry! Follow me:
    1. Connect your iPhone to computer via USB cable
    2. Hold down HOME & POWER button for 10sec (Exactly 10 sec)
    3. Release the POWER button while holding HOME
    4. Wait for iTunes to detect iPhone in recovery mode
    5. Release the HOME button
    6. Restore your iPhone to OS 3.0 by shift-clicking on restore button (JUST OS 3.0)

Thank you for your response! Which 3.0 firmware do I use? the one I got from updating from iTunes or the restored 3.0 one on your website (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6580.20090617.XsP76/iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw). I tried using the restored one on your website and shift-restored my iPhone. then my iphone’s screen turned white, but the whole process stopped during the “preparing your iphone” phase. Then I got the same error (cannot restore your iphone. error 23). Currently my iphone’s screen is still white. I really dont know what to do now. Please Help!!

    Thank you soo much

@Smithy – in order to use redsn0w you have to upgrade your iPhone to OS 3.0 (for 2.x use quickpwn).
